Personalising ChatGPT

Using popular LLMs like ChatGPT without any personalisation means you’re likely going to sound like a robot (with a tendency to be super enthusiastic and overuse emojis).

The best usage of these tools is to help you (or augment you), not replace you, so training ChatGPT to write in your style, with your tone of voice and mannerisms is a really effective way of being able to co-create without always having to edit everything once you're done. You’re going to get better outputs, sounding more like you.

Please complete the task below (please note that if you don’t actually want to do this “for real” - maybe you don’t want to create a ChatGPT account - that’s fine, just add your text into the boxes provided.)

Login to ChatGPT (either on the free or paid version) and visit the “Personalization” section (found in the settings). Experiment with changing the “base style and tone”, as well as the various “Characteristics”. Reflect back (just a couple of paragraphs) on what changes you notice when using it, and which settings best suit your own style. *

Now, go further by writing your own “Custom Instructions” – really trying to articulate how you speak/write, allowing ChatGPT to better mimic that style. Make this suitably detailed, and don’t forget simple instructions like telling it what spelling to use, or what phrases to avoid. Share the instructions you used below. *

Finish the exercise by completing the “About You” section, giving it some details about what you do, what the business is (or will be), allowing ChatGPT to better know who it’s writing on behalf of. Share the instructions you used below. *

Using AI comes with risks, ethical considerations, and (for many people) personal reservations. What “concerns” do you most have about a world where AI is almost unavoidable? Please provide a few thoughts on this. *
