West Lothian business wins Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Award
Linlithgow-based handmade jewellery brand, Candi Co, has been recognised at a Small Business Sunday event run by Dragon’s Den star and retail entrepreneur, Theo Paphitis.
Founded and run by Gillian Hemmings from her home in Linlithgow, Candi Co was selected as one of Theo’s weekly #SBS winners earlier this year. The awards, created by Theo in 2010, celebrates and supports small businesses across the UK, with over 4,000 winners to date.
At the Birmingham event, Gillian was presented with her certificate by Theo in person and had the opportunity to connect with fellow small business owners from across the country. To mark the occasion, she also gifted Theo’s wife a selection of her handmade jewellery pieces, designed and created at her dining table in Scotland.
Gillian said: “Meeting Theo and receiving my certificate was such a proud moment. Running a small business on your own can feel quite isolating at times, so being part of the #SBS community and celebrating alongside other founders was really special.
“Everything I create is handmade from my home in Linlithgow, so to see my brand recognised at such a prestigious event – and to personally hand Theo some of my jewellery – felt amazing.”
Small Business Sunday was set up by Theo Paphitis to shine a spotlight on small businesses and give them access to a wider audience and ongoing support. Winners become part of the #SBS community, gain exposure across Theo’s social media platforms and are invited to attend the annual networking event.
Speaking about the initiative, Theo Paphitis, said: “We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK. My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings. The website will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish Candi Co every success.”
Established in 2024, Candi Co creates colourful beaded jewellery, including gemstone, personalised and Scottish-inspired designs, all handmade in Scotland and available via www.candicojewellery.com and Etsy.
